Iodine ions can catalyze the fading of orange red iron thiocyanate complexes in dilute nitric acid solutions with appropriate amounts of nitrous acid. Within a certain range, the fading rate of iron thiocyanate is linearly related to the concentration of iodine ions. By controlling the reaction temperature and time, and measuring the absorbance of the remaining iron thiocyanate in the colorimetric system, the iodine content can be calculated.
