The low valence manganese in the water sample to be tested is oxidized into purple red permanganate using an oxidant under high temperature and high pressure. The color depth is proportional to the manganese content within a certain range. By measuring its absorbance A at the characteristic wavelength, the total manganese content C in the water sample can be calculated from the calibration curve A-C.
